And the winner is...

My sure-to-be entirely inaccurate Oscar predictions:

Sound Editing
Argo - Erik Aadahl and Van der Ryn
Django Unchained - Wylie Stateman
Life of Pi - Eugene Gearty and Philip Stockton
Skyfall - Per Hallberg and Karen Baker Landers
Zero Dark Thirty - Paul N.J. Ottosson

This one's probably between ZD30 and Skyfall. I'm leaning towards Zero Dark Thirty.

Sound Mixing
Argo - John Reitz, Gregg Rudloff, and Jose Antonio Garcia
Les Misérables - Andy Nelson, Mark Paterson, and Simon Hayes
Life of Pi - Ron Bartlett, D.M. Hemphill, and Drew Kunin
Lincoln - Andy Nelson, Gary Rydstrom, and Ronald Judkins
Skyfall - Scott Millan, Greg P. Russell, and Stuart Wilson

Prediction: Les Misérables; Should win: Skyfall

Music (Original Score)
Anna Karenina - Dario Marianelli
Argo - Alexandre Desplat
Life of Pi - Mychael Danna
Lincoln - John Williams
Skyfall - Thomas Newman

I'm guessing here, but I think Alexandre Desplat wins for Argo. My vote would go to Marianelli gorgeous sore for Anna Karenina.

Music (Original Song)
"Before My Time" (Chasing Ice) - Music and Lyric by J. Ralph
"Everybody Needs A Best Friend" (Ted) - Music by Walter Murphy; Lyric by Seth MacFarlane
"Pi's Lullaby" (Life of Pi) - Music by Michael Danna; Lyric by Bombay Jayashri
"Skyfall" (Skyfall) - Music and Lyric by Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth

It'd be a huge shock if Skyfall doesn't win and I believe it should win.

Animated Feature Film
Brave - Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman
Frankenweenie - Tim Burton
Paranorman - Sam Fell and Chris Butler
The Pirates! Band of Misfits - Peter Lord
Wreck-It Ralph - Rich Moore

I've only seen Brave and Paranorman and would love to see the latter win, but Wreck-It Ralph looks to be the favorite in this category.

Documentary Feature
5 Broken Cameras - Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi
The Gatekeepers - Dror Moreh, Philippa Kowarsky and Estelle Fialon
How to Survive a Plague - David France and Howard Gertler
The Invisible War - Kirby Dick and Ay Ziering
Searching for Sugar Man - Malik Bendjelloul and Simon Chinn

Will win: Searching for Sugar Man; Should win: How to Survive a Plague

Makeup and Hairstyling
Hitchcock - Howard Berger, Peter Montagna, and Martin Samuel
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Peter Swords King, Rick Findlater, and Tami Lane
Les Misérables - Lisa Westcott and Julie Dartnell

Probably goes to Les Mis. My vote would go to Lincoln even though it's not nominated just for Tommy Lee Jones's wig.

Costume Design
Anna Karenina - Jacqueline Durran
Les Misérables - Paco Delgado
Lincoln - Joanna Johnson
Mirror Mirror - Fiko Ishioka
Snow White and the Huntsman - Colleen Atwood

Unless Delgado and Johnson ride a wave of the more multiple-nominated Les Mis and Lincoln, Durran will and should win this one for Anna Karenina.

Production Design
Anna Karenina - Production Design: Sarah Greenwood; Set Decoration: Katie Spencer
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Production Design: Dan Hennah; Set Decoration: Ra Vincent and Simon Bright
Les Misérables - Production Design: Eve Stewart; Set Decoration: Anna Lynch-Robinson
Life of Pi - Production Design: David Gropman; Set Decoration: Anna Pinnock
Lincoln - Production Design: Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Jim Erickson

Lincoln should win this and I think will. Les Mis is probably a close second, though again, I'd be happy to see Anna Karenina make a run at this one.

Visual Effects
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, David Clayton, and R. Christopher White
Life of Pi - Bill Westenhofer, Guillaume Rocheron, Erik-Jean De Boer, and Donald R. Elliott
Marvel's The Avengers - Janek Sirrs, Jeff White, Guy Williams, and Dan Sudick
Prometheus - Richard Stammers, Trevor Wood, Charley Henley, and Martin Hill
Snow White and the Huntsman - Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, Philip Brennan, Neil Corbould, and Michael Dawson

Haven't seen The Hobbit and I what I hate most about The Avengers is its visual effects. Life of Pi gets the win here and should, though the effects in Prometheus and Snow White and the Huntsman are integral to how good each of those movies are.

Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Argo - Chris Terrio
Beasts of the Southern Wild - Lucy Alibar & Benh Zeitlin
Life of Pi - David Magee
Lincoln - Tony Kushner
Silver Linings Playbook - David O. Russell

Terrio's Argo screenplay will win a very close race, just beating out the two pics I think should be competing for this: Russell's SLP and Kushner's Lincoln.

Writing (Original Screenplay)
Amour - Michael Haneke
Django Unchained - Quentin Tarantino
Flight - John Gatins
Moonrise Kingdom - Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola
Zero Dark Thirty - Mark Boal

Boal will likely win his 2nd award (The Hurt Locker) and, like Terrio above, already has the WGA trophy this year. I'd love to see Anderson and Coppola win for Moonrise Kingdom but that would be a longshot.

Film Editing
Argo - William Goldenberg
Life of Pi - Tim Squyres
Lincoln - Michael Kahn
Silver Linings Playbook - Jay Cassidy and Crispin Struthers
Zero Dark Thirty - Dylan Tichenor and William Goldenberg

If Argo wins this, which I think it will, then it will say a lot about what happens at the end of the telecast. But Goldenberg instead should win for his work with Tichenor on ZD30.

Cinematography
Anna Karenina - Seamus McGarvey
Django Unchained - Robert Richardson
Life of Pi - Claudio Miranda
Lincoln - Janusz Kaminski
Skyfall - Roger Deakins

This is a pretty difficult one to pick. I'll guess Miranda's work, including 3D, on Life of Pi will get the trophy here, though Kaminski and Deakins could pull it out.

Actor in a Supporting Role
Alan Arkin - Argo
Robert De Niro - Silver Linings Playbook
Philip Seymour Hoffman - The Master
Tommy Lee Jones - Lincoln
Christoph Waltz - Django Unchained

The closest race of the major categories, this one is almost impossible to pick. Jones seemed like the early favorite, but it seems sentiment is moving in favor of De Niro, who hasn't won an award in over 3 decades. My vote would go to Hoffman, for his blustery performance in the mostly underrepresented The Master.

Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams - The Master
Sally Field - Lincoln
Anne Hathaway - Les Misérables
Helen Hunt - The Sessions
Jacki Weaver - Silver Linings Playbook

The surest thing of the acting categories, Hathaway will win for her showstopping solo early in the film. But like in the Supporting Actor category, my vote would go to The Master's entry here, Amy Adams.

Actor in a Leading Role
Bradley Cooper - Silver Linings Playbook
Daniel Day-Lewis - Lincoln
Hugh Jackman - Les Misérables
Joaquin Phoenix - The Master
Denzel Washington - Flight

Another sure thing is Day-Lewis's win here for Lincoln. He should win the award though I love everybody else in this category except for Jackman, who is merely very good in a bad movie.

Actress in a Leading Role
Jessica Chastain - Zero Dark Thirty
Jennifer Lawrence - Silver Linings Playbook
Emmanuelle Riva - Amour
Quvenzhané Wallis - Beasts of the Southern Wild
Naomi Watts - The Impossible

Maybe my favorite performance of the year, Lawrence seems to be a slight favorite. Riva's work in Amour is  a definite threat though and I could see her pulling a slight upset.

Directing
Amour - Michael Haneke
Beasts of the Southern Wild - Benh Zeitlin
Life of Pi - Ang Lee
Lincoln - Steven Spielberg
Silver Linings Playbook - David O. Russell

With Affleck's (and, hello!, Bigelow's) snub, this is a relatively competitive race. I think Spielberg should win for Lincoln and will likely end up on stage, though Ang Lee appears to be a serious contender for Life of Pi.

Best Picture
Amour
Argo
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Django Unchained
Les Misérables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty

Argo has somehow become this runaway train during awards' season and will almost certainly win the top prize this year. But outside of Les Mis, it's my least favorite movie of this group, while every other one made either my Top 10 or Honorable Mention list. Particularly, I'd be happy seeing either Lincoln, Amour, Silver Linings Playbook, or Zero Dark Thirty win. But alas, Affleck and company will be walking up to the stage.
